Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya. It is geographically located in the central part of Kenya. Nairobi got its name from the Maasai world enkare nyirobi meaning ‘the place of cool water.’ It is fondly referred to as the Green City in the Sun. Its growth started in 1890s, when the British settled there as a resting site while constructing the Kenya-Uganda railway line. In 1905, Nairobi became the British East African protectorate capital and in 1963 it became the official capital of the newly independent country called Kenya. Today, Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city made up of different ethnicity and nationalities. Its current population is estimated to be around 5,000,000 making it the most populous city in Kenya.
